Raùl AntoniFrom The Book The Party They were in agreement that after the pop group left, at one-thirty in the morning, he had been unusually quiet and had kept a lot to himself, so when they became aware, about half an hour or so later, that he was not around they presumed that he had become indisposed, maybe had had too much to drink and, unobserved, gone to bed. The lively chatter slowly began to fade. One by one they had said good night to Teresa in the doorway. Ronald, her son, was the last of the group, kissing her lightly on the cheek and embracing her tenderly. "Is there something wrong?" he asked, noticing that she seemed visibly distracted, almost disconnected. "No, dear, it's just that I am tired ... very tired." The catering company and waiters had long left. Soon the only noises were those of dishes being washed in the kitchen against the soft music of a piano solo coming from a CD player. Teresa quietly helped Elvira, the maid, and a hired assistant pick up the glasses and plates and empty the ashtrays. Absentmindedly she put what was left of the Jabugo ham, Manchego cheese and Spanish pimento-stuffed olives in the refrigerator, the crackers in a cookie bowl, and chocolates and mints in a box. She turned off the CD, went out to the terrace, switched off the lights, eased herself into a black leather armchair and stared motionlessly into the darkness. After a few minutes she got up silently and walked through the fog down the pathway of rough stone slabs toward the ghostly lights at the far end of the lawn, where a massive rock marked the transition to a small area of rugged terrain, beyond which the land sloped steeply downward. Standing next to the rock, she peered intently into the hidden abyss, then retraced her steps, went past the kitchen, said good night to Elvira without pausing and slowly, looking down unseeingly at the stairs at her feet, made her way up to their bedroom, where he should have been. But he wasn't there. About The Author A Caracas' Universidad Central journalism graduate. A year's industrial training program in the U.S. and Canada.
