Patricia BlairFrom The Book (Excerpt from my second novel, Stormcaller, published in 2008): Snake! She pushed against it, managed another scream, but the thing got itself around her chest, and every time she released a breath, its coils tightened. Constrictor. She was going to die. Red mist obscured her vision. Water hit the back of her throat. She choked, gasped for air. The coils tightened. “Kathryn!” Tevis' voice. She couldn't see him through the mist, but she could hear him ... she could hear someone ... splashing in the water. “Kathryn!” She heard other voices. Shouts, Arvandus maybe, Gairth certainly. Her head went under the water. Don't breathe. She fought the urge to gasp. Fire seared her lungs. The coils tightened around her, pulling her down ... She tried to hold her breath, couldn't. Air gasped itself out, water poured in. The coils tightened. The red mist turned gray ... The snake heaved, lifting her head clear of the water. She tried to gasp a breath, couldn't. Air hissed out of her lungs. Hands caught her. The snake convulsed, tried to pull her under water again, but something stopped it. She gasped for air. Her lungs burned. Her throat burned. Water burned in her nostrils. She was going to die. No way she could survive this. The sheer weight of the snake crushed her; it had to be a ton at least. It pinned her arms to her sides, wrapped around her legs. She couldn't think, didn't want to think. Her mind wanted to check out. She didn't try to stop it. Couldn't stop it. The gray mist rolled over her. And turned black.
