From The Book

A STICKY SITUATION

CRACK! The ruler smacks the desk in an angry quiver.

"Wake UP, Mr Jones. You will learn nothing about science if you daydream."

I look across at my best friend Dean and grin. I can tell he's angry when his eyebrows join together in a frown line across his forehead and a pirate-patch of black hair flops over his right eye. We all hate our science teacher, Mr Doppelganger, but Dean hates him most of all.

Mr Doppelganger marches down the aisle of desks like an army sergeant. Hands behind his back holding his ruler like a sharp tail on his long thin body. His head juts forward in the shape of a question mark. His skin is chalky and long grey hair covers the collar of a stiff white shirt. When he passes me I can sniff the mothball smell of Gran's linen cupboard. A musty pong of oldness.

"Now class, open your books at page 66 and begin exercise 1. You have exactly 5 minutes as of ..... NOW!"

Mr Doppelganger checks his stopwatch hanging from a silver chain in his shirt pocket. We all bow our heads waiting for Mr Doppelanger to sit down. I sneak a look at Dean. He's writing now. It's quiet except for the scratching of pencils. Wayne next to me lets rip a smelly fart. Geez it stinks! I start to feel sick and I shift my bum in my chair and turn away from Wayne. Time ticks by slowly but I can't concentrate.

"STOP. Time's up!"

Mr Doppelganger starts to rise from his chair but looks puzzled. The chair rises with him. He sits back down again. Up. Down. Up. Down.

Mr Doppelganger and his chair are glued together.

The class erupts in laughter. Mr Doppleganger's face is purple now as he reaches for his ruler.

CRACK! The ruler smacks the desk and snaps in two.

"MR JONES," he thunders, "COME HERE!"

Dean grins at me as he goes to meet his fate.
