Side-StepsNancy Hobart Summary SIDE-STEPS is a carefully guided interactive journey through the most significant moments of human existence. These moments capture universal lessons which are presented to most individuals at some point in their lives. Each moment is illustrated through the descriptive narrative of a fictional character's memories. The significance of each memory is discussed, and specific questions are offered to prompt the reader to revisit moments unique to him. Memory retrieval and analysis can provide enlightenment and understanding and, hopefully, can inspire the reader to grow. From The Book Imagine for a moment that you are sitting high upon a grassy hill that overlooks a quiet pond, with water still and clear that mirrors the lush green landscape and the cloudless sky above. The grass is soft, and damp, and cool, and it is scented lightly with the perfume of summer clover. With one small side-step, you can be transported through your memories to your earliest summer day and placed gently upon another grassy hill, scented with sweet clover. If you close your eyes , you can with one small step travel to the you of then, and can with all your senses experience the moment you have re-entered. It is not a moment remembered, but re-visited, for you can feel what you felt then, but can evaluate and interpret it with the experience gained from a lifetime of moments that have come between. You can visit anywhere and anytime you've been before, for each moment has been preserved within your memories and has become a part of you and you of it.In order to more easily revisit and to study memories, try to envision your journey into time and space as neither a forward nor a backward progression, but merely as a simple series of small side-steps. The time line of our lives is so compact and the steps we take so close together, that in reality the soul moves as freely from side to side along the line as do the atoms of a molecule. The moments vibrate constantly, absorbing and releasing energy as they move in and out of one another's spaces. As nothing in the universe is truly solid, neither are the individual points along our time lines fixed. The moments interact with one another as though they were engaging in an energetic dance. At times the dance of moments is ordered and meticulously choreographed, at others it is spontaneous and wild in untamed celebration of its existence, and at others it is frenzied, fearful and confused. The dance changes with each breath we take and doesn't stop until we choose to end it, or until our spirits leave this world. Our dances of life's moments intermingle with those of each being we meet along the way. It is no wonder that we experience such difficulty with relationships. Just as we share the air and space and time with every living thing and with the earth and with the universe beyond it, we share our dances, too, as we side-step back and forth, moving together and then apart in patterns we create. The complexity of human interaction can be better understood if we visualize the merging, separating, and exchanging of our molecules and atoms and subatomic particles, and biology and chemistry, and environment and space--- and time. Each moment is a part of those that came before and of those that follow, but sometimes the moments pass so quickly that they become a blur. If you learn to view the moments first separately and then ultimately as they relate to one another, you will be better able to identify and to correct unhealthy behavioral patterns , and you will come to understand that you have the power to learn from every moment and to determine your own destiny. There are the specific memories from which we cannot seem to free ourselves. Sometimes the fleeting image of an expression flashes before our eyes, sometimes we can recall with total accuracy each detail of an event, from the angle of the sun and the length of shadows cast, to the scent that filled the air, to the quickness of our breaths and the tension in our muscles as we responded to the moment which captured that particular event. The memory of the moment can without warning thrust itself into our thoughts or can be retrieved at will to be visited again. These memories are not illusory, but are real and constant, and are an immutable part of our inner beings. They are scattered throughout our lives and can reveal important lessons about the development of our personality, our character, and the way we view and interact with others. In this book I will outline and illustrate the process of how to retrieve memories, to analyze their significance and to accept and embrace them as vital components of your soul through a series of descriptive narratives and attendant discussions of the lessons they portray.
