Kupferberg Memorial Writing Contest Calls for Entries

Symphony Space’s award winning, nationally aired program, Selected Shorts is sponsoring the 2012 Stella Kupferbery Memorial Writing Contest.  The contest is offered to writers worldwide.  The winning submission, selected by Maile Meloy, will be read as part of a Selected Shorts performance at Symphony Space on June 6, 2012.  The story will be recorded for possible broadcast as part of the public radio series.  The cash prize is $1000.

The Rules:  Entries must be no more than 750 words in English.  A single short story that centers around a single object or addresses the theme “Objects of Desire”  may be submitted.  If objects could talk, what stories they would tell? Historical, religious, beloved, passed along, cast aside — every object tells a story.  The story must have a title and be previously unpublished in print or online.  The deadline for entries is March 2, 2012 and the winner will be announced in May.  The contest is open to all ages and residents from any country although all entries must be in English.

Maile Meloy (www.mailemeloy.com) is the award-winning author of the short story collections Both Way Is the Only Way I Want It and Half in Love and the novels Liars and Saints and A Family Daughter.  Her newest book, The Apothecary, is for young readers. .

Each week on public radio stations nationwide, great actors from stage, screen and television bring short stories to life. Selected Shorts is an award-winning, one-hour program featuring readings of classic and new short fiction, recorded live at New York’s Symphony Space and on tour around the country. One of the most popular series on the airwaves, this unique show is hosted by Isaiah Sheffer and produced for radio by Symphony Space and WNYC Radio.  Distributed by Public Radio International.
