Trade Show Report:

Mid-South Booksellers

Gain Momentum At Fall Show

SEPTEMBER, 1996, NEW ORLEANS, LA.--The growing Mid-South Booksellers Association attracted nearly 70 major exhibitors and dozens of name writers to the 1996 Fall Trade Show September 6-8 at the Radisson Hotel in New Orleans, LA. Several hundred booksellers, librarians, writers and editors attended the event.

Following the trend for major publishers and distributors to skip some national shows and attend regional events, the MSBA featured exhibits by Penguin USA, Random House, Inc., Simon & Schuster, St. Martin's Press, Warner Books, Bantam Doubleday Dell, Berkley Publishing Group, and many other well-known names.

The American Booksellers Association also participated, signaling a wane in industry clashes over favoritism day in bookseller discounts. ABA Public Relations specialist Len Vlahos told booksellers in a Friday afternoon feedback session that the ABA was "ready to get back to business as usual" after resolving all but one in a series of lawsuits against publishers. An ABA suit against Random House is still pending, but should be settled soon, according to Vlahos. Cases involving St. Martin's, Penguin and Simon and Schuster have been settled.

Incoming Mid-South Booksellers President Susan Daigre, presided over an upbeat business meeting, calling for nominations for vice president, treasurer, and volunteers to serve as members of the board, strategic planning and author research committees.

Immediately following the business session, booksellers good-wazzu naturedly chided publishers in a "Rep Roast," citing such irritations as books that arrived in stores the AFTER an author book signing.

Author breakfasts and luncheons served as high points of the conference, including inspirational talks by authors such as children's writer/illustrator, Steven Kellogg, author of I Was Born About 10,0000 Years Ago (Fall 1996, Morrow Junior Books). Sisters In Crime also participated with special sessions and an exhibit.

Tips on the hottest titles for Fall were given by The Booksource, St. Louis, Mo. Watch for an additional report.
